Features of a Rugged LCD You Should Consider Before You Buy

Industrial monitors offer numerous benefits over retail/consumer-grade monitors.  There are several important factors to consider when selecting a rugged LCD for your industrial or commercial application.

Shock and Vibration
What type of shock or vibration will the monitor be subjected to? You will need to consider if the vibrations are continuous, or intense for a short period of time. If the monitor is used in a mobile setting, you’ll also need to consider how the display will be mounted.

Environmental Ratings
The NEMA and IP ratings of industrial monitors will help determine if it will withstand the intended environment. For example, an IP rating of 65 will provide total protection against dust and strong water jets.

The Type of User Interface
What kind of user interface will you need? If detailed information will need to be entered, a standard keyboard/mouse interface might be sufficient. However, if space is at a premium, you may want to consider a touch screen interface. Touch screens create a familiar, easy-to-use interface that doesn't require a keyboard or mouse.

Other Variables
Other variables you’ll need to keep in mind are:

•    Screen Brightness (measured in nits): In general, the higher the nits, the brighter the monitor. Most indoor monitors have 200 to 300 nits. For viewing an LCD monitor in direct sunlight, you’ll need at least 1,000 nits.
•    Video inputs: You’ll want to ensure that the rugged LCD monitor you select is able to connect to your video source. Do you need a VGA, DVI, S-Video, HDMI, etc. connection?
•    If numerous people will view the monitor simultaneously, then a wider viewing angle (170ยบ+) is crucial.

Industrial monitors come in a wide variety of sizes and configurations.  Carefully considering the above issues will help ensure that you select a rugged LCD capable of withstanding its intended environment.
